Ayah 1
Nay! I swear by (the) Day (of) the Resurrection.
English - I swear by the Day of Resurrection .
Ayah 2
And nay! I swear by the soul self-accusing.
English - And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection]. .
Ayah 3
Does think [the] man that not We will assemble his bones?
English - Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? .
Ayah 4
Nay! (We are) Able on that We can restore his fingertips.
English - Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips. .
Ayah 5
Nay! Desires [the] man to give (the) lie (to) what is before him.
English - But man desires to continue in sin. .
Ayah 6
He asks, "When (is the) Day (of) the Resurrection?"
English - He asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection?" .
Ayah 7
So when is dazzled the vision,
English - So when vision is dazzled .
Ayah 8
And becomes dark the moon,
English - And the moon darkens .
Ayah 9
And are joined the sun and the moon,
English - And the sun and the moon are joined, .
Ayah 10
Will say [the] man that Day, "Where (is) the escape?"
English - Man will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?" .
Ayah 11
By no means! (There is) no refuge.
English - No! There is no refuge. .
Ayah 12
To your Lord, that Day, (is) the place of rest.
English - To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence. .
Ayah 13
Will be informed [the] man that Day of what he sent forth and kept back.
English - Man will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead and kept back. .
Ayah 14
Nay! [The] man against himself (will be) a witness.
English - Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness, .
Ayah 15
Even if he presents his excuses.
English - Even if he presents his excuses. .
Ayah 16
Not move with it your tongue to hasten with it.
English - Move not your tongue with it, [O Muhammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qur’an. .
Ayah 17
Indeed, upon Us (is) its collection and its recitation.
English - Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation. .
Ayah 18
And when We have recited it, then follow its recitation.
English - So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation. .
Ayah 19
Then indeed, upon Us (is) its explanation.
English - Then upon Us is its clarification [to you]. .
Ayah 20
No! But you love the immediate,
English - No! But you love the immediate .
Ayah 21
And leave the Hereafter.
English - And leave the Hereafter. .
Ayah 22
Faces that Day (will be) radiant,
English - [Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, .
Ayah 23
Towards their Lord looking,
English - Looking at their Lord. .
Ayah 24
And faces that Day (will be) distorted,
English - And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted, .
Ayah 25
Thinking that will be done to them backbreaking.
English - Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking. .
Ayah 26
No! When it reaches the collar bones
English - No! When the soul has reached the collar bones .
Ayah 27
And it is said, "Who (will) cure?"
English - And it is said, "Who will cure [him]?" .
Ayah 28
And he is certain that it (is) the parting.
English - And the dying one is certain that it is the [time of] separation .
Ayah 29
And is wound, the leg about the leg,
English - And the leg is wound about the leg, .
Ayah 30
To your Lord that Day (will be) the driving.
English - To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession. .
Ayah 31
And not he accepted (the) truth and not he prayed.
English - And the disbeliever had not believed, nor had he prayed. .
Ayah 32
But he denied and turned away.
English - But [instead], he denied and turned away. .
Ayah 33
Then he went to his family, swaggering.
English - And then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride]. .
Ayah 34
Woe to you, and woe!
English - Woe to you, and woe! .
Ayah 35
Then woe to you, and woe!
English - Then woe to you, and woe! .
Ayah 36
Does think man that he will be left neglected?
English - Does man think that he will be left neglected? .
Ayah 37
Was not he a semen-drop of semen emitted?
English - Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted? .
Ayah 38
Then he was a clinging substance, then He created and proportioned.
English - Then he was a clinging clot, and [Allah] created [his form] and proportioned [him] .
Ayah 39
Then made of him two kinds, (the) male and the female.
English - And made of him two mates, the male and the female. .
Ayah 40
Is not [that] (He) Able [over] to give life (to) the dead?
English - Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead? .
