Ayah 1
Read in (the) name (of) your Lord the One Who created -
English - Recite in the name of your Lord who created – .
Ayah 2
He created man from a clinging substance.

Ayah 3
Read, and your Lord (is) the Most Generous,
English - Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous – .
Ayah 4
The One Who taught by the pen,
English - Who taught by the pen – .
Ayah 5
Taught man what not he knew.
English - Taught man that which he knew not. .
Ayah 6
Nay! Indeed, man surely transgresses,
English - No! [But] indeed, man transgresses .
Ayah 7
That he sees himself self-sufficient.
English - Because he sees himself self-sufficient. .
Ayah 8
Indeed, to your Lord (is) the return.
English - Indeed, to your Lord is the return. .
Ayah 9
Have you seen the one who forbids
English - Have you seen the one who forbids .
Ayah 10
A slave when he prays?
English - A servant when he prays? .
Ayah 11
Have you seen if he is upon [the] guidance,
English - Have you seen if he is upon guidance .
Ayah 12
Or he enjoins [of the] righteousness?
English - Or enjoins righteousness? .
Ayah 13
Have you seen if he denies and turns away?
English - Have you seen if he denies and turns away – .
Ayah 14
Does not he know that Allah sees?
English - Does he not know that Allah sees? .
Ayah 15
Nay! If not he desists, surely We will drag him by the forelock,
English - No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock – .
Ayah 16
A forelock lying, sinful.
English - A lying, sinning forelock. .
Ayah 17
Then let him call his associates,
English - Then let him call his associates; .
Ayah 18
We will call the Angels of Hell.
English - We will call the angels of Hell. .
Ayah 19
Nay! (Do) not obey him. But prostrate and draw near (to Allah).
English - No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah]. .
